THE LEGEND HIMSELF
Rafael Mendes, born on June 20, 1989, is one of the most dominant competitors in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu history. A prodigy of the sport, he trained under the legendary Ramon Lemos at the Atos academy, quickly making a name for himself with his innovative and aggressive style. Alongside his brother Guilherme Mendes, Rafael revolutionized modern BJJ with his mastery of the berimbolo and dynamic guard play.
Rafael’s competitive rise was meteoric. As a colored belt, he secured major titles, including the Mundial and the Pan Ams, showcasing his technical brilliance. In 2008, he received his black belt from Lemos, marking the beginning of an extraordinary black belt career. He dominated the featherweight division, winning multiple IBJJF World Championships and establishing intense rivalries, particularly with Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles.
Beyond competition, Rafael became a key figure in BJJ instruction. In 2012, he co-founded Art of Jiu Jitsu Academy in California, where he continues to shape future generations of grapplers with his innovative approach and deep technical knowledge.

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS
YOGA FOR BJJ
“Greetings! I am so happy to be your yoga instructor, bringing 15 years of experience and passion to our practice together. My journey into teaching yoga began in 2009, culminating in my full-time commitment to guiding others on their yoga journey since 2012.
Over the years, I have not only led yoga retreats but also established and successfully operated my own yoga studio in Oslo for five enriching years before embarking on a new chapter in Spain. Alongside my husband, Sebastian Brosche, I co-founded “Yoga for BJJ” in 2013, a specialized yoga program tailored for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes. Teaching within the BJJ community has been a source of immense joy for me, and I look forward to sharing the transformative power of yoga with you all during this camp.
My yoga philosophy is rooted in freedom and individuality. I believe in empowering you to connect with your own body, emphasizing personal exploration over rigid perfection. Having experienced classes with inspiring teachers worldwide, I bring a diverse range of influences into my teaching.
My classes are characterized by creativity, flow, and challenge, with a constant invitation for you to infuse your practice with your unique touch. I hold certifications in Vinyasa, Rocket, Yin, Restorative, Yoga Nidra, pre and postnatal yoga, and Acro Yoga. During this camp, our focus will be on invigorating Vinyasa sessions in the mornings and rejuvenating Yin practices in the afternoons.”
